Differents Types of Tobacco

Basically we can distinguish 2 types of tobacco : The brown ones and the blond ones.
Each one with its virtues and characteristics.

The Brown Tobacco

Also called "French Tobacco", with a dark color, which basis is the Paraguay and its derived products. Non-aromatic, with a thin cut and a particular aroma, sometimes a tart and a full-bodied taste.
Mainly consumed in France (Saint-Claude, Caporal Export), in Belgium (Semois Tobacco), in Italy and in Switzerland, It's practically unknown in other countries.

The Blond Tobacco

With American and eastern origins - It has been cultivated in many countries and it can be divided in some principal families :

The Virginie

Developed in the beginning of the 12th century in the south of U.S.A. This tobacco has gained a great credibility all over the world.
Ranging from the bright yellow (Virginia Bright) to the dark brown (Dark Virginia), This tobacco is mild and sweet. Basically used for most of the American, British and Danish mixtures.
Found in its pure state (composed by many types of Virginie) in the Capstan, in Dunhill Virginia, in Mac Baren, in Virginia No1 or in the Virginia No 444.

The Burley

It has an American origin. Light and sweet. It can be smoked with or without other tobaccos.
American and Danish mixtures are strong. For example: Plumcake, Golden Blend (composed by white Burley and Kentcky) or Mac Baren mixture.

Eastern Tobaccos

Cultivated in Turkey and in the Balkans, those tobaccos have a flavour that ranges from very sweet to very full-bodied. They can be used in British mixtures, for example: Dunhill and Four Squares.

The Perique

It is a legendary tobacco, cultivated by the Indians, in a restricted area of Louisiana.
In certain number of mixtures, it is found as a condiment (Ex: Kentucky Flowers).

The Latakia

Found out in the 19th century in Syria, this tobacco has a deep black color and a strong smoked taste. It can never be smoked in its pure state. It is used to give aroma to vigorous and flavoured mixtures; for example: Balkan, Sobranie, Dunhill and Rattray mixtures.

The Cavendish

It is not a variety of tobaccos, but a procedure of double fermentation that gives sweetness and aroma to ferments tobaccos.
Then it is used in Danish mixtures (Dark Twist, Salent mixture, Latakia Blend) or American mixtures (Old grand dad).

The Sauced Tobaccos

From any tobacco, it is impossible to create a new variety that could give it a smell of cherry, mint, whisky, rum or vanilla (Cherry Ambrosia, Rumcake, etc …).
They are normally sweet and coloured mixtures, which attract the most enthusiastic smoker and the not less enthusiastic detractor.

Smoking a pure tobacco is exceptional. However, for certain types of tobacco ; for example, <Lakatia>, it is completely out of question.
That's why manufactures suggest that you make up a mixture or that you smoke the mixtures already made by specialists, called blenders, who are also artists.
They are going to play with different tobaccos so as to exalt their aroma and create original flavours. They also play with different cuts to come up with a mixture with a good combustion and a fresh smoke ( <Kleberg> is a good example).
